Whenever Chinese New Year's coming to town, everyone starts buying cookies and biscuits which are only available during this particular festive season.

Last year, I featured Kuih Kapit with pork floss. This year, its not something unusual anymore. Haha. You can buy it anywhere.

I am sure most of you have heard about sambal mini spring rolls however this container below are not mini spring rolls with sambal filling. Instead, each of them are filled with pork floss.

The container was initially filled to the brim but I happily chew them all... well almost...wahahaha!

They taste good and each of them are packed with pork floss. The size and amount of filling used to be more standardize. Now you can find a fat one bursting with pork floss and some minimally filled. Nevertheless they are very crispy.

The aunty selling this lives very near to my home. However, she doesn't sells it at her home. If we want to buy, we would have to call her. Well, it doesn't really matter as sometimes I see her in the evening. She sells kuih kapit with pork floss too at a whopping RM25. I am not sure she has stalls but she will be around Lorong Selamat and another location which I forgot :P Giving her a call will be best. Her number is in the picture below.

A small container of this already cost RM16. Finished within 2 days by 2 person (mom and I). Another person's mini spring roll that has similar taste to the ones I had are selling at one of Pulau Tikus coffee shops (the one nearer to the church). They were once partners before they went separate ways.

This snack is available all year round, 365 days *evil grin*

Happy Chinese New year & Selamat Ber-Fatt Choy~

Almost 7pm after I walked a few rounds at Tasik Aman with Mr.Boss and Mrs. Boss. They continued with the outdoor gym machines while I decided to call it a day and continued walking to my dinner place :)

Hohoho...enticing fried chicken smell but I will NOT detour to the place.

Regardless I had been exercising or not lately, it doesn't deter me from getting a plate of Jeff Char Koay Teow.

Blurry pictures :P Sorry for that. Not much light beyond the stall. It's the best shot I could get.

This is how a plate of CKT Special looks like. Haha I lost count of the prawns. I like this type of CKT as they are savoury and not spicy. I don't know why but it was used to be called CKT ganja. It sure does make one yearn for more after a TINY plate of it.

One thing I like about their prawns is they don't have those weird taste which some prawns in normal CKT has. Although they are NOT huge and crunchy, its good enough for me.

RM5 for a plate of special CKT and RM3.50 for the normal one. Coupled with Teh'O Ais Limau, sounds like a good dinner to me.

PS:
Some of my friends don't like it as the flavour was too heavy, some loves it. Hahaha so its your call lah to eat there or not.

I also asked the boss to cook less koay teow for me that night. So it seems less koay teow. Haha

We just had dinner at Sungai Dua but my friend was still hungry. Well... after the meal, we hung around the dinner place to chat. By then, the clock was showing 8pm. She felt like having sotong goreng again which she once tried a few weeks ago with another friend of mine, Serene. So far, she introduced a few good places already hasn't she?

I haven't been to Hammer Bay stall before. I didn't even know there is a stall there :P Located at Queensbay Roundabout ( from Sg Nibong Bus Terminal) 12 o'clock direction.

This place is pretty good. Directly by the sea side and be prepared to be swept by the tsunami. Kidding. You can also opt to touch the murky Penang seaside water :)

Not long after settling at one of the table and enjoying sea breeze, a pile of Tepung Goreng Sotong was served. RM10 for a medium plate of this crispy-ly delicious mollusk.

There is something in the batter which they fried the squid with. It doesn't turn soggy or hard even after becoming cold.

Every sotong goreng order will be served with some sauce. Should be sweet thai chilli but non-spicy.

You can ask for another plate of sauce if you want. FOC.

Of course, the cat came after we finished the sotong goreng. Beautiful cat for a stray. Its soft white fur is even cleaner than our white shirt :S

Hammer Bay also serves rice with seafood dishes. There are 2 stalls. I ordered the sotong goreng from the stall in the picture shown at the begining.

Obama Inauguration 2009

Posted by Cokeworld Citizen | 9:46 PM | | 4 comments »

Because I know RTM1 will not be showing everything, I overnight-ed at KFC the whole night until the next day to watch the inauguration. Although there were disruptions (smooth connection at 5am) its still watch-able and the commentators knew in and out about Obama AND I get to eat fried chicken for supper :)

Can you imagine our internet connection is still not suffice to watch streaming videos online although its signal was excellent?

Kudos to the new President. USA has waited 220 years for a black president. Malaysia is only 50 years old. Another 3/4 way to go before anything of that scale could happen.

Happy watching~

I have been wanting to try this wood fire pizza for a long long long time. I was still in secondary school when I spotted this stall. Until recently, my friend told me about it...hmm make that my friend's Kelantan friend told her and she passed on the message :)

Special, no? I don't have to go to some poncy Italian restaurant for a wood fire pizza for a start.

And followed by warm greetings from the aunty. Of course, when there are piles of orders, she can't smile at you and wait for your order.

My friend and I agreed to have Hawaiian Chicken pizza since its popular among customers, according to the aunty. The pizza was then made and skillfully baked by the uncle behind the brick stove. Pizza was done in about 10 minutes.

This is what I call skillfully baked wood fire pizza. Not even a single bit of it was burnt!

Sorry for the poor quality pictures, didn't bring my camera. I went on a separate day for the pizza. When I visited the stall for the first time, the aunty told me I had to wait for almost 2 hours if I want my pizza :S Turns out to be someone ordered a number of pizza for a birthday bash party.

The pizza was delicious. It's not the thin type but the crust was just nice, inside was still soft with crispy outer layer and not oily at all. The only thing that was oily is the melted cheese. Fresh chicken meat was used coupled with canned pineapple bits. Pizza base pesto was pleasantly sweet and tasty. Not overwhelming or super sour. Very contrast to much flavourful Frankie's Pizza.

But on second thoughts, what's the difference between wood fire pizza and an oven bake one? Why people swears by wood fire pizza? No burnt pizza? Foldable pizza crust? Flavours fused better? Additional smokey flavour? I can't seem to pin point the reason :P Any enlightenment from you all?

RM11 per pie (medium). Not exactly cheap either. The stall only opens at night.

Absolutely going to try other flavours as well and to find out why wood fired is preferred.

Penang Restoran Nasi Kandar Khaleel

Posted by Cokeworld Citizen | 1:04 AM | , , | 2 comments »

It was always that question "Where to eat?" that makes everyone's head spins. Fortunately, we don't have to stop at some parking lot to think about it. After almost 2 months holiday, my friend kinda miss Khaleel's food, so there we go.

There were not many people when we reached there. Probably it was a bit early for dinner. Anyway, our stomachs were growling so we quickly ordered and who knows if suddenly a mass of people would appear out of nowhere, clogging up the kitchen with orders!

First order was Nasi Goreng Kerabu. Generous portion and enough to feed 2 small eaters. Not a bad dish at all. The fried rice taste good. Apart from pieces of sotong, chicken and vegetables (carrots, cucumber), there are also chopped lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, onions, few smashed cili padi.

Ain't it colourful?

I never said anything about grabbing a plate of nasi kandar didn't I ;)

My friend order Nasi Putih Paprik. A separate stir fried dish served with a huge plate of white rice.

Again, it's enough to feed 2 small eaters :) The sweet soury gravy stir fried with chicken, sotong, a chockful of vegetables, onions and few pods of cili padi. The cili padi is just to enhance the smell. Both the fried rice and the dish below is not very spicy.

Don't worry, the slight heat from the chili won't kill. Indian's (Mamak in this case) like everything colourful don't they? RM10.20 for 2 teh'o ais limau, a plate of nasi goreng kerabu and 1 nasi putih paprik.

For saving measures and really small eaters, you can order 1 nasi putih paprik and an additional plate of white rice for your teman makan. lol

Bao Teh Fruit

Posted by Cokeworld Citizen | 10:06 PM | , , | 10 comments »

These are some fruits my dad's friend plucked from a tree at his home. I'd never seen this fruit before and my dad only knows it by the name of 'Bao Teh' because it supposedly to give a tea after-taste after consuming.

Seriously, I really don't know what its called in English. But I do know they taste like a mild rose syrup on my first few bites. Then, after I washed my palate down with some water, the left over pulp in my mouth taste like those normal jambu air (large maroon red variety).

The textures are really similar to those jambu air but not as crunchy as them. There is no 'tea' after-taste as claimed by my dad's friend. Anyone seen this fruit before?

Jambu Air Mawar exploration to be continued.

Finally I step foot at this famous place, Lorong Seratus Tahun Curry Mee. I never knew its so damn near to my father's work place.

I thought the place would be packed with people. Maybe its still early.

This stall is located at a street directly opposite Red Rock hotel.

Looks fiery hot? I assure you, its not. This is their signature style. Every table would have a bowl of this chili and you add it to your noodles on your own. The chili was good. Not bitter and super fragrant. You can take a bit and taste it on its own.

This is my bowl of curry mee with added coagulated pig's blood. Normal serving would cost RM3.80 Love the look of those ingredients on my noodles.

Looks good and taste good. The soup is sweet and smooth. This is because they used prawn as their soup base with minimal santan. However, I still remember my first time trying the noodle at PISA's Penang Street Food Fest. The prawn broth was more prominent.

Be there early to avoid disappointment :)

Hong Kong - Winter Melon Wife Biscuit

Posted by Cokeworld Citizen | 3:42 AM | , | 2 comments »

Last year, my aunt came back from her Hong Kong holiday. It was a blast listening to her travel experience especially the part where she and lil cousin bro get to meet Bosco and another Miss Hong Kong actress. Lucky fellow! He must be grinning from ear to ear while meeting a beautiful lady :S

Of course, when a person travels to Hong Kong, he or she cannot miss bringing back Lou Por Peng (Wife Biscuit) as souvenirs.

It's really small isn't it? Can you imagine every single piece of this cost RM2? But of course, when you vacuum packed it and put it in some fancy box, that's the kind of price you will get.

Wing Wah bakery store was trying to revamp the biscuit's taste and outlook. This biscuit is totally different from its predecessor. Buttery flaky pastry layer with its jelly like winter melon filling. Pastry was good but I am not too sure about the filling. It doesn't feel like eating Lou Por Peng anymore :(

I still prefer the old lard pastry filled with minimal sweetish winter melon filling.

Okay it may look a bit battered but its b-lard-y good.

Tropicana 100% Orange Juice

Posted by Cokeworld Citizen | 1:15 AM | , | 0 comments »

I was walking around Sunshine Farlim on a weekend stroll and I found this in one of the fridge. I was quite amazed when the labels stated "100% Orange Juice" and even more amazed when looking at its price tag... RM6.80. Other brands like Peel Fresh and Florida's Natural are selling 100% juice at some hefty price tag.

I finished the whole bottle myself. Mom didn't want to touch it. Well, let's just say it tastes exactly like RM6.80 :P

Penang Mobile Mung Bean Jelly

Posted by Cokeworld Citizen | 5:18 AM | , | 9 comments »

In the age of mobility, everything has to be on the go and this includes our food. Mung Bean jelly (Lek Dau Kuih) has been selling in such a way for as long as I could remember.

In a hot day like this, a cooling jelly would be a nice treat. Too bad the uncle ran out of the santan types. Pinkish jellies are Ribena flavoured while the white translucent ones are original flavours.

RM 1 for 3 piece and they usually move around an area every day.

However, the jelly wasn't as good as I thought. Too sweet and the texture is bad. Unlike the ones I used to have when I was small. QQ smooth mung bean jellies are my all time childhood favourite when I have not develop interest in ais kacang and cendol. Hahaha.

Happy chilling~

I am sure most of the people who went to Kek Lok Si only visited the structure and their famed stinky tortoise pool. The place where I spend my childhood and quite some money throwing kangkung to the tortoise :P Now, although I only live about 5-10 minutes away from it, I hardly visit Kek Lok Si. Anyway, just google about Kek Lok Si for the information.

Sometimes we are lazy. We do not want to go other places for meals after visiting the temple, so we just walk into Kek Lok Si Vegetarian Restaurant to fill up our bellies.

They serve 'chu char' style food and noodles but mostly we only go there for noodles.

Sorry that there are no noodle pictures here. I realised I hadn't taken photos of the noodles after the plates were polished. I've been patronising this restaurant since I was a kid. Despite being very oily and loaded with MSG, the noodle flavours and never changed a tiny bit.

'Stir fried yau mak' is equally as good as the noodle. Full of wok hei.

There is one appetizer worth mentioning. 'Deep Fried Zhai Ngor' (Vegetarian Goose). Everytime we go there, we will definitely order it.

Unlike most of the soggy 'zhai ngor' available at vegetarian economy rice stall, the ones in the picture were served hot, crispy and oily.

If you feel like having some vegetarian food and not afraid of overload-MSG-sakit kepala and lazy to go down hill and think where to eat and look for carpark, the place would be recommended :)
